Alphonse Mucha's Contribution in the Advancement of Art Nouveau

Alphonse Mucha, an artist and poster illustrator was born in 1860 in the town of Ivančice. He started his career as an illustrator in Paris in 1894. His works are easily recognizable as the use of bright colours, depictions of beautiful women and stunning, highly decorative backgrounds are the key aspects that made his artworks iconic and unique. Because of his beautiful style and the aesthetic portrayed in his works, his talents were discovered by a legendary actress, Sarah Bernhardt who then commissioned him to design a poster for a Greek melodrama that she was a part of. As the poster gained its popularity, many discovered Mucha's stunning artworks through it and were inspired by it. Thus, a new form of art style known as Art Nouveau was born.

Alphonse Mucha's artworks are what fundamentally defined the Art Nouveau style, his choices of colours and compositions were new to Paris at the time and his life-sized posters created a sensation throughout the city, inspired artists such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Théophile Steinlen incorporated Mucha's designs and techniques into their own work. And through the development of lithographic printing, these artists took great risks in their designs, pushing Paris into a golden age of poster arts.

"The way he treated Sarah Bernhardt's poster was revolutionary," said Tomoko Sato, curator of the Mucha Foundation in Prague.

Before his success, Mucha worked as an apprentice scene painter in Vienna and a portrait painter in a Moravian town after being rejected by the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. His talents were eventually seen by two local townspeople, whose patronage allowed him to finally gain formal training in Munich, and eventually Paris.

After his poster designed for the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt was published, commissions and partnerships flooded into his career, leading into major developments in his artistic abilities and his reputation. Sarah Bernhardt was also delighted with the poster made by Mucha and hired him as an artistic director of her theatre, designing costumes, posters, jewellery and stage sets for the productions. Not long after, a Parisian painter named Ferdinand Champenois saw the commercial potentials in Mucha’s iconic art style and offered him the opportunity to design advertisement posters for various brands such as JOB cigarette papers, Chocolat Idéal, and Moët & Chandon. These posters feature a so-called “Mucha’s Woman” as the focus of the illustration to further appeal to the people with ethereal themes and aesthetics.

Over time, Mucha started incorporating Slavic motifs into his art out of his patriotic feelings, these motifs include florals, luxurious ornaments and patterns that are inspired by Moravian craftworks and folk arts. His decisions lead to larger successes as France enjoyed Russian culture at the time, thus making his art popular among those who seek inspiration in the culture of a foreign country. In 1896, Mucha's reputation continues to grow as his artworks were featured on a popular magazine named La Plume. The creator of La Plume, Léon Deschamps devoted 6 editions of his magazine to Mucha's artworks, further spreading his works and fame across the country. By this point, Mucha's works are closely linked with the definition of the Art Nouveau style, which features natural, organic motifs with exquisite decorations and backgrounds and utilizes light and unsaturated colours to portray a sense of divinity and tranquillity.

In 1904, Mucha travelled outside of the country to visit New York and was greeted as a celebrity as his works were well known even across the sea. He stayed in New York for two months, designing posters for American actresses who commissioned him because of his style. However, Mucha's primary purpose for the visit was to raise funds for a project that he was deeply passionate about - The Slavic Epic, a project that contains 20 paintings and was made as a way of promoting the culture of his country and as a monument to Slavic unity.

Finally, in 1910, Mucha returned to his homeland and focused on the creation of The Slav Epic, during which he only accepted commissions that would promote cultural events. After 18 years, in 1928, Mucha was finally able to present the completed Slav Epic to the city of Prague. Unfortunately, only 11 years later, Nazis invaded the city and claimed the area. Mucha was arrested and questioned by the Gestapo as he was a Czech patriot, he later died in poor health conditions shortly after his release. Mucha was buried in the Slavin monument of the Vyšehad cemetery, along with many other influential Czechs. The inscription engraved on the monument reads: "Though dead they still speak to us." As his works continue to spread and inspire endlessly.

Mucha's artworks expressed to the viewers in a unique and exquisite way with his extraordinary sense of design and composition, a golden era of art emerged from his works as it defined and revolutionized an iconic style known as Art Nouveau. Although Mucha himself disapproved the name of the movement, Tomoko Sato stated: "From his point of view, (Art Nouveau) was new art. He thought art should be permanent-universal or timeless."
